Purpose:
Water pumps in a vehicle are simple devices. The purpose of a water pump is to force coolant through the engine block, hoses and radiator to remove the heat that the engine produces while functioning. The water pump is driven off the crankshaft pulley or in some cases the pump is gear driven off the crankshaft.

Major Role:
Major role of a water pump is to push coolant through the vehicles engine block, radiator and hoses to get the engine heat away from the system. The water pump drives off the crankshaft pulley or the crankshaft itself. The suction pump draws the coolant into the water pump from the radiator.

Part Description:
The water pump is mounted on the front of the engine block in most cases and is belt driven. It circulates the engine coolant through the engine block, radiator, and heater core.
